The SERENADA mall, located at Dobrego Pasterza Street in Krakow, is an attempt to break the statically neutral facade by using means of artistic expression.
Shopping malls are usually large-scale objects, located in most cases in urban and downtown spaces. These are typically introverted designs in which stores are located along the internal promenades. Such functional solutions usually result in huge building facades which are usually "dead", and they do not create a field of interaction with public space. However, in this instance the designers vision was to create something new, something that has been never done before, and the GRC manufacturer's project team helped with realization of this idea.
The designers intended to introduce something new in the designed object in the form of a ceramic prefabricate in two forms: four cross elements forming a specific "window", which fill the cubical element, extended slightly from the face of the façade. The diagonal structure of the elevation gains dynamism, and thanks to the offset from the outer supporting wall, it generates a shadow on sunny days and details the depth of the structure on days without the sun.
Cost of half a kilometre of elevation high at 12-18 m was too high. Therefore, the ceramic product was replaced with a pre-cast concrete, coloured in bulk, in a colour similar to traditional brick.
Serenada is 19.330m2 facade area, including 900 different panel types, formed from 128,000 GRC elements in 3,056 different types, and combined precast elements with stainless steel reinforcement. A specially designed stainless steel supporting structure enabled the creation of something which had never been done before.
