Occupational standards

“A skilled workforce is crucial to the success of the construction industry. Employers must continue to have a diverse pool of talent on which they can draw, boosting UK competitiveness now and in the future.”
Baroness Shriti Vadera, Business Minister at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform

Concrete is the most commonly used structural material in the world but often the most underestimated in terms of the science that lies behind it. Engineers, technologists, technicians and operatives alike need to familiarise themselves with the constituents, application and handling of concrete at all levels to ensure that it is used safely and sustainably to its maximum benefit and effect.

In the coming months ahead, The Concrete Society and Institute of Concrete Technology will be working closely with industry representatives and a national awarding body to develop a package of accredited qualifications designed specifically for the concrete industry and also working with Proskills to define three new occupational standards to meet the career path progression needs of the industry. With this new collaboration The Concrete Society and Institute of Concrete Technology aims to become an internationally recognised organisation for the development of accredited training courses and qualifications meeting the requirements of learners and employers who want to improve their knowledge and standards in the field of concrete technology and engineering.

“We need accredited education and training, to ensure the appropriate level of quality is incorporated into the work from architecture through to supply.”
Professor Peter Robery, 17 May 2007
